Iran grants amnesty to 139 death row prisoners

Iran has announced a general pardon for 139 prisoners who had been sentenced to death, marking what officials described as an unprecedented move in the country’s judicial history, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday. 

According to Iranian media reports, judiciary spokesperson Ali Asghar Jahangir said that for the first time, a total of 139 death row inmates have been granted clemency in a collective decision.

He stated that the pardons were approved by Supreme Leader Mojtaba Ali Khamenei.

The decision applies to prisoners who, according to authorities, did not have any private complaints against them and were not involved in security-related offences.

Jahangir added that the individuals were considered eligible for amnesty due to their improved behaviour in prison, expression of remorse, and participation in rehabilitation programmes.
