Court to indict suspect in TikToker Sana Yousaf murder case on September 20
A local court in Islamabad has fixed September 20 as the date to indict the prime suspect in the murder case of TikToker Sana Yousaf, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
According to judicial officials, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal heard the case on Saturday. The accused, Umar Hayat, was brought to court amid strict security arrangements.
Sana Yousaf, just 17 years old, was murdered on June 2 in Islamabad. Police investigations revealed that the tragedy stemmed from a personal dispute between Sana and the accused.
Hailing from Upper Chitral, Sana had quickly risen to online fame with her vibrant videos on TikTok and Instagram, amassing more than a million followers.
For many young Pakistanis, she represented ambition, confidence, and the digital opportunities available to the new generation.
The case was registered at the Sumbal Police Station. Police later confirmed that Sana had been subjected to repeated harassment before her death.
If convicted, Umar Hayat could face the death penalty or life imprisonment under Pakistani law.
Sana’s murder sparked widespread outrage. Social media platforms were flooded with tributes from fans and calls for justice from activists, who demanded stronger laws and protections for young women working in digital spaces.
Women’s rights organizations have linked Sana’s case to a larger pattern of violence against women in Pakistan, urging authorities to not only punish offenders but also address the root causes of misogyny and online harassment.
Sana’s killing was not the only incident to raise alarms in June. In Quetta, Anwarul Haq, a US-returned Pakistani, confessed to murdering his teenage daughter, Hira, for her activity on TikTok.
Initially, he had tried to mislead investigators by blaming unknown assailants. However, he later admitted to fatally shooting her, describing her social media content as 'objectionable'.
