Jasprit Bumrah in hot water after stump mic captures derogatory remark against Bavuma

A controversy emerged on the opening day of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens after Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah was caught on the stump microphone making a derogatory remark about South African captain Temba Bavuma.

The incident occurred when Bavuma was facing an LBW appeal off Bumrah’s delivery. The ball struck the pads, prompting a loud appeal from the bowler, but the umpire ruled the batter not out.

As Indian players discussed whether to take a DRS review, Bumrah’s voice was clearly picked up on the stump mic, in which he was allegedly heard mocking Bavuma’s height, saying, “He’s a dwarf,” followed by an expletive.

Moments later, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant was also heard repeating the same remark, further fuelling the situation.

The audio clip quickly went viral across social media platforms, sparking widespread criticism from fans and analysts who condemned the behaviour as unsportsmanlike and disrespectful.

The behaviour of the Indian players has drawn strong condemnation, with many calling it a blatant violation of cricket’s code of conduct and sportsmanship.
