Ministry calls meeting to review 2D barcode system progress on August 20

The Ministry of National Health Services has announced the implementation of a 2D barcode system for the pharmaceutical sector to curb the circulation of counterfeit medicines, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday.

A follow-up meeting to review the project’s progress has been scheduled for August 20.

According to the ministry, the adoption of a digital framework under the Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has made the elimination of fake drugs inevitable.

Officials described the barcode system as a revolutionary step that would both protect patients and strengthen Pakistan’s pharmaceutical industry.

The ministry stressed that counterfeit medicines pose a serious threat to public health while also causing significant financial losses to the pharma sector.

Through the digital verification system, consumers will be able to authenticate medicines more easily, ensuring safety and restoring confidence in prescribed treatments.

Authorities added that the initiative is also expected to boost pharmaceutical exports by aligning Pakistan’s industry with international quality and traceability standards.

“This is an important milestone for both patient protection and industrial growth,” the Health Ministry remarked.

The 2D barcode mechanism forms part of a wider effort to modernize healthcare regulation through digitalization. 

Experts said the system would ensure better monitoring, transparency, and accountability across the entire pharmaceutical supply chain.
