Smith’s Smart review saves him as Bangladesh celebrate wrongly

Australia batter Steve Smith survived a major scare during the Test match against Bangladesh after he was initially given out caught behind, only for the decision to be overturned following a review.

The Bangladesh players believed Smith had edged an off-side delivery after the ball passed close to his bat and was caught by the wicketkeeper.

They immediately began celebrating, confident that Smith had been dismissed.

Smith, however, appeared equally convinced that he had not hit the ball and called for a review even before the umpire had raised his finger.

On-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena subsequently gave Smith out, and the decision was referred to the third umpire because Smith had already taken the review.

The review showed that the ball had hit the ground instead of Smith’s bat before reaching the wicketkeeper.

The decision was therefore overturned, and Smith was declared not out, allowing him to continue his innings.

Bangladesh’s early celebrations quickly turned into disappointment.
