SHC Sukkur bench hears petition on laptop scheme for students

The Sindh High Court Sukkur bench Tuesday heard a constitutional petition seeking the provision of laptops to poor, deserving, and intelligent students across the province. The hearing was adjourned until January 28 for further proceedings.

The petition, filed by lawyer Sohail Latif Memon, highlighted that while the Punjab government has provided free laptops to over 500,000 students since 2011, Sindh lacks a formal policy despite having funds allocated for digital initiatives.

During the hearing, the court inquired whether Sindh has a laptop scheme similar to Punjab. Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi asked if a formal policy exists in the province. The petitioner’s lawyer clarified that although a few laptops had been distributed individually, there is no structured or formal scheme in Sindh.

The court was informed that the Secretary of Education had submitted a written recommendation to the Sindh Chief Secretary to formulate a comprehensive laptop policy for students. The report, presented through the Secretary’s representative, emphasised the need for a structured digital program.

The two-member constitutional bench, comprising Justice Zulfiqar Ali Sangi and Justice Arbab Ali Ekro, adjourned the case, allowing the parties time to take further action and prepare for the next hearing on January 28.
