Trump says Russia, Ukraine near ceasefire after Berlin talks

Russia and Ukraine may be nearing a ceasefire agreement following recent diplomatic engagements, US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday while speaking to the media at the White House.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, Trump said that talks held in Berlin had resulted in what he described as significant progress, adding that discussions on a potential ceasefire had taken place with Ukrainian and European leaders. 

He said the United States had presented a peace plan that had received full backing from European leadership.

According to the US president, consultations with Kyiv and key European capitals focused on pathways to halt the fighting and move toward a negotiated settlement after nearly three years of war.

However, European Union officials cautioned that major challenges remain. 

EU leaders said disagreements over territorial control continue to pose the most significant hurdle to a ceasefire agreement, despite progress on other elements of the negotiations.

The conflict, which began with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, has killed tens of thousands and displaced millions, with repeated diplomatic efforts failing to secure a lasting truce.
