Alarming rise in crimes against women in India

Reports highlighting the rise in crimes against women in India have raised concerns over women’s safety and the effectiveness of the country’s legal and judicial systems in addressing such cases, reported 24News HD TV channel on Thursday.

According to international media reports, crimes against women in India have increased significantly since 2010, with the number of reported cases more than doubling during this period. 

Data from India’s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) indicates that more than 80 crimes against women are reported on average every day across the country.

Reuters, citing official government figures, reported that 29,536 cases of rape were registered in India in 2024.

The report highlighted concerns over delays in the justice system, alleged police inaction, and social challenges, including the impact of the caste system, which continue to create difficulties for many women seeking justice.

Indian social activist Ranjana Kumari said that delays in legal proceedings and cases where offenders avoid punishment have weakened the fear of the law among criminals.

Indian lawyer Karuna Nundy criticized the government’s response, stating that more efforts are needed to address the underlying causes of violence against women, including harmful social attitudes.

The issue has attracted international attention, with rights groups and spectators calling for stronger legal measures, faster trials, and improved protection for women across India.
