Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly unanimously backs interim provincial status
The Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly Thursday unanimously passed a joint resolution seeking interim provincial status for the region and constitutional, political and democratic rights equal to those enjoyed by Pakistan’s provinces, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
The resolution also called for effective representation for Gilgit-Baltistan at the national level.
Member of the Assembly Syed Jalal Ali Shah presented the resolution during a session chaired by Deputy Speaker Malik Kifayat-ur-Rehman.
Lawmakers supported the resolution without opposition, reflecting broad agreement in the House on the demand for greater constitutional recognition and political representation.
The resolution urged the federal government to take steps to address the region’s longstanding constitutional status and ensure that its residents receive rights comparable to those of citizens of the four provinces.
It also called for stronger participation by Gilgit-Baltistan in national decision-making institutions.
