IHC removes Ali Nawaz Awan as LG Commission chairman
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) Tuesday in a verdict announced in the case about Local Government Commission ordered the removal of Ali Nawaz Awan from his post as the commission’s chairman, 24NewsHD TV channel reported.
The verdict on the appointment of Prime Minister Imran Khan’s aide as the chairman of the Local Government Commission (LGC) was reserved by the single-member bench of the IHC, comprising Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani.
The petitioner in the case was the Islamabad Metropolitan Corporation (IMC) Mayor Sheikh Ansar Aziz.
In the last hearing, on behalf of the federal government, Islamabad Advocate General (AG) and Assistant Attorney General (AAG) Barrister Mumtaz informed the court that Adviser to the Prime Minister on Capital Development Authority (CDA) Affairs Ali Nawaz Awan, was not amongst the first three names proposed for the chairing body.
He added that Awan’s name rose to the top when the first three candidates recommended for the slot were rejected.
It is pertinent to note that Islamabad High Court (IHC) earlier disposed of Mayor Islamabad Sheikh Ansar Aziz’s contempt of court petition against the federal government after the government withdrew his suspension notification that originally suspended the Mayor for 90 days.
