Punjab allocates over Rs 27b for Prisons Department in budget 2025–26

The Punjab government has significantly increased its allocation for the Punjab Prisons Department in the fiscal year 2025–26, earmarking over Rs 27.25 billion compared to the Rs 23 billion allocated in the previous year.

According to proposed budget documents, a major portion of the allocation — Rs14.03 billion — has been designated for salaries and allowances of prison staff. Rs130 million has been earmarked for retirement benefits.

A sum of Rs 8.11 billion has been allocated for the operation and administration of prison facilities. This includes funds for the day-to-day functioning of jails, security management, inmate care, and other essential services.

The budget also includes Rs 4.81 billion for physical assets, such as security equipment, transportation, surveillance systems, and furniture.

Moreover, Rs31.3 million has been reserved for the repair and maintenance of prison buildings and facilities.

The total budgetary increase of more than Rs4 billion compared to the last fiscal year suggests a comprehensive approach to prison reforms.
