Senior Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader and former Senate chairman Raza Rabbani Wednesday said that the government ministers’ warning to a parliamentarian for subjecting him to mob violence in case he supported the no-confidence motion was tantamount to violation of the Constitution, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
“Every member of Parliament has the constitutional right to participate in the proceedings of the House and vote according to his or her consciousness,” he stated while talking to media in Islamabad.
“It’s fascism to stop a democratic and constitutional process through violence,” he stated.
He said that the National Assembly speaker was bound to ensure the safety of parliamentarians and added: “The speaker must ensure that there is no hindrance inside or outside the Parliament during voting for the no-confidence motion.”
He pointed out that a no-confidence vote was an internationally recognised democratic way of changing a government.
“Article 95 of the Constitution has been made for a vote of confidence,” he said.
“It is the constitutional right of every member of the House to vote on such a resolution, provided that the constitutional requirements are met,” he added.
