NAB seeks court’s nod for closing probe against Sharifs in sugar mills case

Giving arguments in the favour of application, seeking closure of an inquiry against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif in the Chaudhry Sugar Mills (CSM) reference, NAB Prosecutor Intikhab Alam Joeya told an accountability court (AC) in Lahore that the inquiry had already been closed, and now the court’s approval was required for closing it for good in light of the order given by the Lahore High Court on February 4.

He said that the probe was closed following an amendment in the NAB law, which took away from the anti-corruption watchdog the power to investigate the case.

The prosecutor further told the court that no evidence of corruption had been found against the Sharifs, and that the NAB could not go ahead with the probe under the new law.

AC Judge Rana Muhammad Arif heard the case.
