Security sources clarify no deadline on Pakistan-India ceasefire

Security sources Friday dismissed any ambiguity regarding the duration of the ceasefire between Pakistan and India, stating that no fixed deadline, such as May 18 (Sunday), exists for its expiry.

According to the 24NewsHD TV Channel, the clarification comes a day after Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, during a Senate address, claimed that the ceasefire between the two nuclear neighbours had been extended “until May 18” following recent military-to-military contact.

Security officials emphasised that the ceasefire is a mutual understanding between both nations and remains intact as long as neither side violates it.

 “The ceasefire can only end if either or both parties breach the agreement,” a security source said.

They further stated that Pakistan is fully adhering to the truce, and so far, India has also respected the ceasefire. However, they warned that any adventurism by the Indian side would be met with a strong and effective response.

Meanwhile, the foreign minister had remarked in the Senate that military channels between Pakistan and India had led to the temporary extension of the ceasefire until May 18. He suggested that the issue would eventually move from military to civilian leadership for a broader political dialogue.

“Ultimately, the matter will go to dialogue between the civilian leadership of the countries,” Dar said, adding that Pakistan was prepared for a “composite dialogue” to resolve all bilateral issues.
