Asma Jahangir group wins SCBA elections

The Asma Jahangir group has taken the lead in the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) elections, according to unofficial results released on Thursday.

In Supreme Court Lahore Registry, Independent Group-backed presidential candidate Haroon Rasheed wins by securing 629 votes. 

Professional Group candidate Taufiq Asif secured 431 votes. Presidential candidate Haroon Rasheed has a lead of 198 votes from Supreme Court Lahore Registry. 

Asma Jahangir Group candidate Haroon-ul-Rashid wins the presidency seat and Malik Zahid Aslam Awan wins the secretary seat. Independent Group President candidate Haroon Rasheed won from Multan by getting 135 votes. Professional Group Hamid Khan President candidate Taufiq Asif came second from Multan by getting 115 votes. Independent Asma Jahangir Group Secretary candidate Zahid Aslam Awan won from Multan by getting 133 votes. Professional Group Hamid Khan Secretary candidate Mian Irfan Akram came second from Multan by getting 109 votes. 

In Bahawalpur Independent Group Ahsan Bhawan supported President and General Secretary win election. Bahawalpur Professional Group Hamid Khan Group President and General Secretary lost. In Bahawalpur Independent Group Haroon Rashid won by getting 89 votes. Independent Group General Secretary candidate Zahid Aslam Awan won by getting 88 votes. 

Preliminary counts indicated that the group secured victories in Quetta, Sukkur, Bannu and Swat. In Quetta, Haroon-ul-Rashid of the Asma Jahangir group received 120 votes, while Tawfiq Asif of the Hamid Khan group followed with 101 votes.In Sukkur, Haroon-ul-Rashid secured 55 votes compared to 15 for Tawfiq Asif. In Bannu, the vote count stood at 25 to 5 in favour of Haroon-ul-Rashid.

From Swat, Haroon-ul-Rashid gained 27 votes, while Tawfiq Asif received 23.Polling continued until 5 pm across 13 stations set up nationwide for the SCBA elections. A total of 4,393 lawyers are registered to cast their votes. In Islamabad, 710 votes were polled. 

Hamid Khan Group has won Supreme Court Bar Association from Principal Seat in Islamabad as Taufiq Asif has got success by obtaining 359 votes while runner up candidate of Asima Jhangir Group Haroon Rasheed got 341 votes. 

At the seat of Secretary, Asma Jahangir Group candidate Zahid Aslam Awan got 428 votes and got victory over Mian Irfan Akram who got 198 votes.
