Lahore traffic police launch crackdown against 2.9 million e-challan defaulters

Lahore Traffic Police have launched crackdown against vehicles with outstanding e-challans and in this regard the Chief Traffic Officer Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi has directed formation of special teams to take action against persistent defaulters, reported 24NewsHD TV.

According to traffic police, around 2.9 million vehicles in the city are currently e-challan defaulters. Checkpoints have been established at different locations to identify and impound vehicles with significant numbers of pending violations.

The traffic police have also released a list of the top 100 vehicles with the highest number of pending e-challans.

Officials said 10 vehicles have more than 300 pending e-challans, while 307 vehicles have over 200 outstanding e-challans. More than 4,000 vehicles have over 100 pending e-challans.

The CTO said more than 100 vehicles have repeatedly violated traffic laws hundreds of times. He added that e-challans are being issued through the ANPR system against vehicles involved in more than 20 violations.

The CTO has directed officials to immediately take e-challan defaulter vehicles into custody and shift them to police stations. Special teams have been activated to enforce the orders.

The provision of 14 key police services to e-challan defaulters has also been restricted. Officials said defaulters may not be able to access services including driving licence facilities, character certificates and other services until their outstanding challans are addressed.

According to the CTO, the Safe City system, Police Khidmat Markaz and licensing system have been integrated to facilitate the implementation of the new measures. 

A separate crackdown is also underway against motorists involved in tampering with or altering vehicle number plates.
