Study reveals almonds may benefit brain and metabolic health

A new study has found that regular almond consumption may improve brain function and metabolic health, particularly among people with elevated blood sugar levels.

Published in The Journal of Nutrition, the study involved 60 people aged 40 to 60 with high blood sugar but without type 2 diabetes. Participants were divided into two groups, with one group consuming 28 to 40 grams of almonds daily for six months.

Researchers found that participants who consumed almonds performed better in cognitive tests, including improved information processing and reaction speed. They also experienced some reduction in body weight and better blood sugar control.

According to researchers, almonds are rich in fibre, protein, healthy fats, magnesium and antioxidants which may help regulate blood sugar and reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, potentially supporting both metabolic and brain health.

However, researchers noted that the study was limited by its small sample size and said further research is needed to determine whether similar benefits would be seen in healthy individuals.
