Two tourists drown after ice breaks on frozen lake in India’s Arunachal Pradesh
The breathtaking beauty of a frozen Himalayan lake turned deadly when two tourists from Kerala drowned after the frozen surface of Sela Lake in Arunachal Pradesh's Tawang district gave way on Friday afternoon.
The incident occurred at an altitude of around 13,700 feet above sea level.
According to Indian media reports, a group of seven friends from Kerala had travelled to the scenic lake for sightseeing when disaster unfolded.
One tourist ventured towards the middle of the frozen lake when the ice suddenly gave way, causing him to plunge into the freezing water.
In a desperate attempt to rescue him, two more tourists rushed forward, but the weakened ice collapsed again, and both were also dragged into the icy depths.
The sudden tragedy turned a leisure trip into a scene of panic and grief.
Rescue efforts were launched, while authorities warned visitors to avoid walking on frozen water bodies, especially in high-altitude regions where ice conditions can be extremely fragile.
