Populism: Arsonists in Power Corridors

The acrid smell of burning diplomacy hangs heavy over Asia this week. In New Delhi, Narendra Modi’s government spins tales of "surgical triumph" after May’s Operation Sindoor. In Tel Aviv, Benjamin Netanyahu boasts of "preemptive justice" while Gaza’s ashes drift across the Sinai. Two continents. Two wars. One poison: the calculated cruelty of populism. The world’s most dangerous leaders share a playbook: manufacture crises, ignite nationalism, and bury failures in the rubble of war. As Pakistan’s skies still smolder from May’s conflict with India, and Gaza’s ashes drift across the Sinai, we must confront the poison enabling this carnage: strongman populism.   

I. Modi’s Theatre of Blood: When Elections Demand Enemies 

Narendra Modi didn’t launch Operation Sindoor to combat terrorism. He launched it to salvage his crumbling political fortress. Consider the anatomy of his gambit:  

- Water as Weapon: Scrapping the Indus Waters Treaty to starve Pakistani farmlands during planting season—a move condemned as ecologically catastrophic.

- Diplomatic Arrogance: Ignoring Pakistan’s offers of joint investigations into the Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 tourists, and instead expelling envoys and cutting trade ties.  

- "Precision Strikes" Exposed: Satellite imagery revealed missiles hitting villages and mosques—not terror camps—killing 31 civilians. Pro-Indian media falsely claimed Karachi’s port was captured and Pakistani jets downed, fueling nationalist hysteria.   

Behind the bravado? A 9% inflation rate, collapsing job growth, and 2026 state elections. For Modi, war is cheaper than reform. When Trump brokered a ceasefire, Modi spun it as Pakistan “begging for mercy”—a lie exposed by White House transcripts.   

II. Netanyahu’s Genocide Gambit: Burning Iran to Save Himself

As Modi’s missiles flew, Benjamin Netanyahu lit his own pyre. His June 13 strikes on Iran—killing 78 civilians and six nuclear scientists—weren’t about security. They were a war criminal’s survival kit:  

- Distraction Tactics: ICC genocide charges loom while Gaza’s death toll exceeds 54,000.  

- Coalition Calculus: Ultra-Orthodox conscription protests threatened his grip on power.  

- Peace Sabotage: Rejecting Hamas’ ceasefire offers to avoid accountability for October 7.   

Netanyahu’s “Rising Lion” operation targeted nuclear facilities, but his real aim was regime resurrection. As one analyst noted, “He’s afraid once Gaza ends, eyes will turn to his corruption trial”. Trump’s tacit endorsement—“excellent strikes”—exposed the U.S.-Israel collusion Pakistan warned would “threaten global security”.   

III. The Populist Playbook: Five Steps from Ballot to Battlefield  

Modi and Netanyahu wield identical tools:  

1. Invent Existential Enemies

   Pakistan = “terror state”; Iran = “nuclear threat.” Modi weaponized Hindu identity; Netanyahu invoked Auschwitz-era fears.  

2. Sabotage Truth  

   Indian TV channels broadcast AI-generated footage of “Karachi’s fall”; Netanyahu’s Mossad leaked staged commando videos.  

3. Profit from Pain 

   Pakistan bled $1 billion/hour during the Four-Day Conflict; Israel’s defense stocks surged 12% after the Iran strikes.  

4. Ignore Institutions

  Modi shredded the Shimla Agreement; Netanyahu defied ICJ genocide rulings and ICC warrants.  

5. Silence Dissent 

  Journalists jailed in India; protests banned in Tel Aviv.   

“Strongmen don’t solve crises—they rent them,” notes security analyst Fatima Khan. “Their legacies are mass graves.”   

IV. The Global Enablers: Arming the Arsonists

Populists flourish when the world averts its gaze:  

- U.S. Complicity: Trump mutedly “urged caution” while supplying F-35s to Israel and praising Modi’s “strong leadership” .  

- UN Impotence: Russia and China vetoed sanctions against India and Israel.  

- Economic Hypocrisy: EU condemned Modi while signing $100B trade deals; U.S. oil policies shielded Netanyahu from energy market blowback.   

V. Antidote: Resisting the Strongman Spell  

This poison demands systemic remedies:  

1. Sanction the Inciters: Freeze assets of entities funding Modi’s BJP hate machine; halt arms transfers to Israel.  

2. Arm the Truth: Share satellite images of Modi’s civilian victims; broadcast Gaza’s orphaned children globally.  

3. Restore Diplomacy: Reinstate Indus Treaty oversight; empower the IAEA to monitor Iran-Israel de-escalation.   

Populism is a match thrown on dry tinder. Modi and Netanyahu cling to power by lighting bonfires of others’ futures. Modi and Netanyahu aren’t statesmen—they’re crisis merchants trading blood for polling points. As Pakistan mourns May’s dead and Tehran counts its scientists’ corpses, one truth screams: These men aren’t leaders—they’re undertakers in suits, burying peace to resurrect their dying regimes. Our survival hinges on exposing their war games before the next match is struck.
