EU may impose sanctions on Israel over Gaza assault

The European Commission is set to discuss possible sanctions on Israel in its meeting today, amid growing criticism of Israel’s military offensive in Gaza, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Wednesday.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, condemned Israel’s ground assault, warning that it would further worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in Gaza, causing “more deaths and more destruction”.

According to Kallas, proposals under consideration include suspension of trade privileges, as well as targeted sanctions against extremist Israeli ministers and violent settlers.

“These measures will send a clear message that the European Union demands an immediate ceasefire in Gaza,” she stressed.

The move reflects a rare and sharp escalation in EU pressure on Israel, as international calls for a halt to hostilities intensify.
