Kashmiri leader Abdul Ghani Bhat passes away

Prof Abdul Ghani Bhat, a prominent figure in Kashmir's political and freedom movements, passed away at his residence in Sopore, North Kashmir, on Wednesday evening.

According to family sources, Bhat, who resided in Botingoo in Baramulla district, died after a brief illness. Details of his funeral prayers have not yet been shared by his family.

Bhat had a longstanding role in the region's political landscape. In 1986, he co-founded the Muslim United Front (MUF), and later became chairman of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), a coalition of Kashmiri groups formed in 1993.

He also served as president of the Muslim Conference Jammu and Kashmir (MCJK), an organization banned by the occupying Indian government.

He dedicated his entire life to the struggle for the right to self-determination. His lofty thinking, bold stance and political insight are a beacon of light for the Kashmiri people. His death is an irreparable loss not only for Kashmir but also for the entire freedom movement.
