Governor Muhammad Balighur Rehman has referred the matter of the appointment of caretaker chief minister of Punjab to the Assembly speaker, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday.
The governor wrote a letter to the speaker to proceed with the constitutional process of appointing the caretaker chief minister under Article 224A(2) of the Constitution as the chief minister and opposition leader could not agree on a single name for the appointment of caretaker CM within the stipulated period.
Earlier, Opposition Leader Hamza Shehbaz wrote a letter to the Punjab governor presenting the nominees for the appointment of caretaker CM.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz ( PML-N) nominated senior journalist Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi and former bureaucrat Ahad Cheema as caretaker chief minister of Punjab. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed the nominees with his coalition partners Asif Ali Zardari, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, and Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain.
The speaker will constitute a joint parliamentary committee under Article 224A. Consisting of 3 government and 3 opposition members, the body will be given three days to take the decision.
If the committee fails to reach a consensus, the matter will go to the Election Commission of Pakistan and the election commission will select one of the names sent by the government and the opposition leader.
