Former England Cricket Captain Mike Smith dies at 92

Former England cricket team captain Mike Smith has died at the age of 92, Warwickshire County Cricket Club announced on Monday.

According to the Club, the former captain, also widely known by his initials “MJK”, passed away on Monday.

The right-handed batter made his Test debut for England in 1958 and went on to play 50 Test matches during his international career.

He captained England in 25 of those matches.

In a statement posted on social media, Warwickshire described Smith as a club legend and expressed deep sadness over his death.

During his distinguished first-class career, Smith scored 39,832 runs in 637 matches, placing him among the highest run-scorers in the history of first-class cricket.

Beyond cricket, Smith also represented the England national rugby union team in rugby union in 1964, underlining his reputation as a rare dual-sport athlete.

He later served as a match referee for the International Cricket Council from 1991 to 1996 after retiring from professional cricket.
