IMF proposes increase in BISP stipend

The International Monetary Fund has proposed a significant increase in payments under the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), suggesting that the stipend be raised by Rs 5,500 to bring the total amount to Rs 20,000, according to sources.

Officials said the IMF mission was briefed on the data and structure of beneficiaries registered under the sponsorship program, and discussions indicated that an increase in the amount is under consideration as part of broader social protection measures.

At the same time, the IMF delegation is engaged in detailed budget negotiations with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR). The mission is scheduled to hold three meetings with FBR officials as part of the ongoing talks.

Sources said the IMF has insisted on maintaining the tax collection target at Rs 15,264 billion for the upcoming fiscal framework, while Pakistani authorities are making efforts to seek a reduction in the target.

The next round of negotiations between Pakistan and the IMF is set to take place today, where several taxation and revenue measures will come under review. Among the proposals under discussion is the possible withdrawal of sales tax exemptions in certain sectors.

Deliberations are also underway regarding the purchase and sale of residential properties, with a proposal to end sales tax exemptions on such transactions. The IMF side has also emphasized the need to expand the scope of digital invoicing to improve transparency and documentation in the economy.
