LHC grants stay after sugar mills challenge CCP fine

October 18, 2021 01:17 PM

Granting stay in the petition filed by sugar mills’ owners, the Lahore High Court has ordered the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) not to go ahead with the imposition of fines on them until further orders, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

The mills’ owners on Monday had challenged the government’s decision of the imposition of fines for selling sugar at exorbitant rates in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

Three days ago, on October 16, Pakistan Sugar Mills Association Chairman Zaka Ashraf had said that sugar mills owners are being arrested and fined.

Addressing a press conference along with other office-bearers on Friday, he said that justice should be equal for all. "Sugar mill owners are worried about the steps taken by the government," he maintained.

He said that the government was forcing the millers to crush the sugarcane in its raw form. "This will reduce the production of sugar in the country. The destruction of the industry will benefit India," he opined.

Prime Minister Imran Khan had a few days back ordered action against the sugar barons in view of increasing prices of the commodity in the market.
