Australia clinch Sultan of Johor Cup with thrilling 2–1 win over India

Australia defeated India 2–1 in the final to win the 10th Sultan of Johor International Hockey Tournament, claiming the title for the third time in the event’s history, 24NewsHD TV reported on Saturday. 

The final, played at the Taman Daya Hockey Stadium in Johor Bahru, saw Australia take the lead in the 13th minute through Grobelaar N., before India’s Eka Anmol equalized in the 17th minute.

Both teams traded fierce attacks throughout the game, but Grobelaar struck again in the 59th minute, securing Australia’s decisive 2–1 victory.

In the third-place playoff, defending champions Great Britain edged Pakistan 3–2, while Malaysia defeated New Zealand 5–3 to claim fifth position.

Pakistan’s Sufyan Khan emerged as the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals, earning him the best scorer award.

Captain Hanan Shahid followed closely with five goals, finishing as the second-highest scorer.

Earlier in the group stage, Pakistan had defeated Malaysia 7–2, drawn 3–3 with India and Australia, but lost 6–1 to Great Britain and 3–2 to New Zealand.

Overall, the tournament featured six teams — Australia, India, Great Britain, Pakistan, Malaysia, and New Zealand.

Historically, Great Britain have won the Sultan of Johor Cup four times, while India have lifted the title three times.
