Covid-19 claims life of former KP police chief

Covid-19 has claimed the life of former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa police chief Nasir Khan Durrani, sources said on Monday.

Durrani was battling for life at Mayo Hospital Lahore for a few days, the insiders said.

 Known as a dynamic and reformist police officer was on a ventilator at the intensive care unit (ICU).

Durrani joined the police as assistant superintendent of police (ASP) in 1982. He headed KP for more than three years.  He was the pioneer of Rescue-15 and remained the chairman of Punjab Police Reforms Commission in 2018.

As KP IG, Durrani brought in a strict accountability policy and sent packing some 800 policemen and punished over 6000 negligent officials.

He established police assistance lines, the police access service, in all the districts, set up six specialised schools, formed a special combat unit of specialized commandoes on the pattern of Special Services Group of the army, reformed the Counter-Terrorism Department, and introduced technology-based investigation like geo-tagging.
