A delegation of five religious figures from the Sunni school of thought met Hafiz Muhammad Saad Rizvi, chief of the banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP), in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail on Monday and urged him to release a video message to end the ongoing violent protests in different parts of the country.

According to insiders, Saad Rizvi kept quiet instead of responding to Sunni religious leaders’ request. The Sunni religious figures told Saad Rizvi that violence and arson attacks were hurting the interest of Pakistan itself. They asked the TLP chief to help maintain peace in the country.

Sahibzada Dr Abul Khair Zubair, Sahibzada Hamid Raza, Sarwat Ejaz Qadri and Jalil Ahmad Sharqpuri comprised the delegation, which met Saad Rizvi in a bid to broker a peace deal between the government and the protesting party.

TLP supporters blocked roads across the country in protest against the arrest of party chief Saad Rizvi and demanded expulsion of the French ambassador to Pakistan. The protest took an ugly turn when the police and protesters clashed in Lahore on Sunday.
