UN resident coordinator meets PM Shehbaz in farewell call

United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Muhammad Yahya called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday in a farewell meeting.

The prime minister thanked Yahya for his services in strengthening cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations during his tenure.

He also appreciated the continued support of the UN country team for Pakistan’s development and humanitarian priorities, particularly in addressing the effects of climate change, promoting sustainable development and strengthening natural disaster management.

Shehbaz also acknowledged the UN’s role in mobilising international support for Pakistan, particularly during the devastating floods of 2022.

The prime minister congratulated Yahya on his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

He wished Yahya success in his new responsibilities and expressed hope that cooperation between Pakistan and the United Nations would continue to strengthen.

Yahya thanked the prime minister for the support extended by the government to him and the UN Country Team during his tenure. He reiterated the United Nations’ commitment to supporting Pakistan’s development and humanitarian agenda.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and other senior government officials were also present at the meeting.
