SUPARCO warns 2027 could be Pakistan’s hottest year on record

Pakistan’s national space agency, SUPARCO, has issued a climate warning, cautioning that 2027 could become the hottest year on record, 24NewsHD TV reported on Friday.  

According to the warning, Pakistan may experience prolonged heatwaves and extended periods of drought next year.

SUPARCO said the effects of the La Niña climate system are expected to begin emerging toward the end of the current year.

The agency warned that accelerated glacier melting in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Gilgit-Baltistan could heighten the threat of flooding in vulnerable mountainous areas.

Meanwhile, desert and coastal districts of Sindh and Balochistan are expected to face extreme temperatures and an increased risk of water shortages.

The warning highlighted concerns over dwindling water resources in arid regions, which could place additional pressure on local communities and agriculture.

SUPARCO further cautioned that intense heat and unseasonal rainfall may adversely affect key crops, including wheat, cotton, and rice, posing challenges for agricultural productivity and food security.

In Lahore, recent rainfall brought relief from intense heat, although the downpour reportedly disrupted the electricity supply system in several areas.

Climate experts have increasingly stressed the need for preparedness and adaptation measures as Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, including extreme weather events, water stress and glacier-related hazards.
