Carmel-By-The-Sea: Don’t wear heels in this US town without permission

It may be one of California's most charming and picturesque coastal towns, but Carmel-by-the-Sea has a law that might trip you up, especially if you're wearing high heels.

Since 1963, the city has enforced an unusual ordinance: anyone wishing to wear high-heeled shoes with a heel taller than two inches and a base narrower than one square inch must first obtain a permit from City Hall.

The law was introduced to reduce the risk of injuries caused by the city’s uneven streets, many of which are disrupted by tree roots and lined with rugged stone walkways. Officials say the regulation was also meant to protect the city from liability in case of falls or injuries.

Fortunately, the permit is free and easily obtainable. All you must do is fill out a short form at City Hall, agreeing not to hold the city responsible if you trip or injure yourself while wearing high heels.

While enforcement of the law is rare, the quirky rule remains a fun piece of local tradition. Many tourists apply for the permit as a unique souvenir from their visit, even if they never plan to wear heels.

So, if you’re heading to Carmel in stilettos, make a pit stop at City Hall – your feet (and the city) will thank you!
