11 Sikhs injured In violent clash inside Gurdwara in Germany
At least 11 Sikhs were wounded after a violent altercation broke out at a gurdwara in the Duisburg area of Moers in Germany. Clips circulating online, reportedly filmed inside the place of worship, show members of two groups engaging in a fierce clash.
The footage contains disturbing scenes, with participants seen using sharp weapons such as knives and kirpans during the confrontation.
Around 40 individuals were reportedly involved in the incident, prompting a large-scale police response, including the deployment of special tactical units, according to German newspaper Bild. Witnesses claimed that, along with bladed weapons, pepper spray and even a firearm were used during the violence.
Authorities were investigating the exact trigger behind the clash. Early indications suggest the dispute may be linked to disagreements over the election of a new management committee, as well as ongoing tensions related to control of gurdwara funds.
A 56-year-old member of the congregation, who witnessed the brutal altercation on Monday, told Bild, “This must have been planned. Shortly before the service began, the attackers suddenly had pepper spray and sprayed their opponents. Then one of them fired a pistol. And I also saw knives."
It is learnt that the former and current board members had disagreements over the management of gurdwara funds. “There have been problems and conflicts for some time. But it’s mainly about influence and who has the final say here at the temple. When the attack began, many fled the temple in panic; it could have ended much worse. Fortunately, no one’s life is in danger," the witness added.
All 11 injured individuals received medical attention at the scene from paramedics and an emergency doctor. Subsequently, police detained at least one suspect while investigators continued to piece together the sequence of events and identify those responsible.
The firearm reportedly used in the incident has not yet been recovered. However, based on shell casings found at the scene, initial assessments suggest it may have been a blank-firing pistol.
