Athlete from Morocco wins Sukkur's first int'l marathon

Athletes from Morocco, Ethiopia and Kenya grabbed the first, second and third positions in Sukkur’s first international marathon on Sunday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

In this connection, a ceremony was held in the honour of athletes.

As many as 28 athletes from 10 countries also participated in the marathon.

The foreign athletes were taken on a tour of the River Indus on a boat.

Over 3,000 athletes, 700 women and 2,300 men, participated in the first international marathon held in Sukkur on Sunday.

Named Lok Sahita Marathon, it started and finished at IBA Public School Sukkur.

On their way to Khairpur and back, the athletes passed through the iconic Sukkur Barrage, enjoyed breathtaking view of the mighty Indus River, and ran alongside lush banana plantations, vast date palm farms, and the fertile green landscapes that define this historic and vibrant Sindh region.

For women, a dedicated 10K certified run from IBA Public School to the Sukkur Barrage Museum and back celebrates empowerment and equal representation.

Speaking at the start of the marathon, Sukkur Mayor Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh declared the race a historic moment for Sindh.

He said that the race was a reflection of a healthy lifestyle and constructive activities of the youth. “The marathon is recognized by the World Athletics and certified by the IMS,” the mayor said, and added, “Athletes from Kenya, Italy, Ethiopia, Morrocco, Japan, Uganda and the UK are participating in it.”
