Apple CEO Tim Cook resigns, but will continue to play active role in company

Tim Cook has explained his decision to step down as chief executive officer of Apple, saying the timing was right as the company remains in a strong position with a promising future.

Speaking to employees during a company meeting, Cook emphasized that he is in good health and will continue to play an active role within Apple. He noted that his decision was guided by the company’s solid performance, an “incredible” product roadmap, and confidence in his successor, John Ternus.

“Now was the time,” Cook said, adding that leadership transition is best done when the business is thriving and the next leader is fully prepared.

Apple confirmed earlier this week that Cook will step down as CEO and assume the role of executive chairman. Ternus, 51, who has spent most of his career at Apple and currently heads hardware engineering, will take over as chief executive.

In his new position, Cook is expected to focus on Apple’s global and political relationships. Over recent years, he has developed ties with key international figures, including Donald Trump, a relationship that has drawn mixed reactions. Cook indicated that strengthening such connections will remain a priority.

“This is an area where we’ve built relationships over many years, and I think I can help with that,” he said, adding he may also contribute to other strategic areas.

At 65, Cook reiterated that he remains energetic and plans to serve as executive chairman for the long term. He originally took over Apple following the illness of co-founder Steve Jobs.

Meanwhile, Ternus expressed optimism about Apple’s future, highlighting upcoming innovations. “I am especially excited to step into this role at this moment,” he said, adding that the company is once again poised to “change the world.”
