Mother of Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif passes away at 90

Mother of former prime minister and PML-N top leaders Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, Begum Shamim Akhtar, passed away on Sunday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. She was 90 years old.

The news about the death of the grandmother of PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz was announced by party leader Attaullah Tarrar in a tweet. He also said Shehbaz’s son Suleman Shehbaz telephoned him and told him that arrangements were being made to take his grandmother’s body to Lahore for burial.

According to PML-N sources in London, Begum Shamim’s health deteriorated four days ago.

The sources said her Namaz-i-Janaza will be offered in London and then her body will be taken to Pakistan for burial.

The sources further said consultations are going on over the shifting of Begum Shamim’s body to Pakistan and other issues.

Meanwhile, the personal physician of Nawaz Sharif has advised the PML-N Quaid against air travel. According to 24NewsHD TV channel, the doctor said air travel is not suitable for the PML-N supremo at this moment.

Begum Shamim Akhtar had travelled to London to meet his son Nawaz Sharif on February 15 this year.

Prime Minister Imran Khan expressed his condolences with the Sharif family and prayed for higher ranks in Jannat for the departed soul. Former president Asif Ali Zardari and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PML-Q supremo Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, Punjab Assembly Speaker Chaudhary Pervaiz Elahi, Azad Jammu Kashmir Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider, Federal Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed, PPP central leader Qamar Zaman Kaira, Senator Agha Shahzaib Durrani, Minister for Prisons and Colonies Fayyazul Hassan Chohan also expressed their condolences with the Sharif family.

Maryam Nawaz, who was sitting on the stage at the PDM's rally in Peshawar on Sunday, was informed about the death of her grandmother, who was residing with her son Nawaz Sharif in London.

The TV channel quoting its sources said Kot Lakhpat Jail superintendent informed former chief minister Punjab and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and opposition leader in Punjab Assembly Hamza Shehbaz about the sad demise of Begum Shamim Akhtar.

According to the TV channel, Shehbaz Sharif burst into tears on hearing the sad news of his mother’s deaths. The channel reported there may be a possibility that both father and son who are in NAB custody may be released on parole from imprisonment on the orders of the Home Secretary for attending the Begum Shamim’s funeral. The parole will be granted to the PML-N leader if the body of late Shamim Akhtar is brought to Lahore, the TV channel reported.

Former finance minister Ishaq Dar retweeted, “News of his wife's death was given to Mian Nawaz Sharif in jail and today Mian Shehbaz Sharif will also be informed about his mother's death in jail. May Allah give Shehbaz Sharif the strength to bear this trauma. Ameen.”

It is pertinent to note that Nawaz Sharif's mother, Begum Shamim Akhtar appeared in the media for the first time in 2018 when Nawaz Sharif was about to return from London with her daughter just before general elections of 2018.

Begum Shamim had vowed that her son Nawaz and granddaughter Maryam Nawaz were innocent and were punished for standing with the slogan of 'vote ko izzat do'. “If (Nawaz and Maryam) are sent to jail, I will also go with them," she added.

In an interview with Voice of America (VOA) in 2018, mother of Nawaz Sharif said: “I never talked to the media. There was no situation like this in the past. I did not see a situation like this ever.”

“I will go there. Yes...though I am feeling pain. Those people have made me worry for my children. Those people have made me worry for my children. So I am feeling like I am ill. But I will go,” she said at that time.

“When Nawaz Sharif became prime minister for the first time then his father did not allow him to eat at government’s expense. He sent him money for the expenses every month from home. There are enemies after him and they levelled allegations on him. These are wrong allegations,” the mother of Nawaz Sharif said in the interview.
