Cybercriminals using honey traps, fake job offers to target youth: National CERT issues warning

The National Computer Emergency Response Team (National CERT) has issued a stark warning to the public, revealing a surge in cybercrime incidents targeting youth, students, and freelancers through honey traps and fraudulent job schemes, reported 24NewsHd TV channel Wednesday.

In its latest advisory, National CERT revealed that cybercriminals are luring victims through fake freelancing opportunities and bogus job offers, often reaching out via social media and adding unsuspecting users to WhatsApp groups under the guise of legitimate employment.

“Victims are being blackmailed after being exposed to pornographic content shared within these groups,” the advisory stated, adding that some individuals have been extorted for amounts ranging from Rs 10 to 15 lakh by criminals posing as officials from legal institutions.

The cybercriminals are reportedly using personal social media profiles to scout and target their victims. The advisory urges citizens, especially youth and freelancers, to avoid unverified job offers and to immediately exit suspicious WhatsApp groups. “Forwarding or sharing pornographic material can also constitute a criminal offence,” it warned.

To stay protected, National CERT recommends adjusting privacy settings on social media accounts and sticking to well-known freelancing platforms. “Only use reputable websites for freelance work,” the advisory emphasised.

In cases of blackmail or suspicious online activity, the advisory strongly urges users not to remain silent. Victims should report such incidents via the National CERT, PTA portal, or the NCCIA portal immediately.

The advisory comes as part of a broader push to raise public awareness about rising cyber threats and to equip citizens with the tools and knowledge needed to stay safe in an increasingly digital world.
