Leghari calls for power sector reforms with World Bank's support

Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari met a World Bank delegation led by Anna Bjerde, Managing Director of Operations, to discuss Pakistan’s ongoing reforms in the energy sector, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Thursday.

In a meeting with World Bank Managing Director Anna Bjerde and Federal Minister Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan highlighted the establishment of the Independent System and Market Operator (ISMO) committee which will oversee the new market dynamics.

He noted that subsidies will be targeted only at deserving segments of the population and the World Bank's cooperation is sought to refine the subsidy system.

The Federal Minister also mentioned that an additional 7,000 MW of electricity can be provided at reduced rates to industries, which is expected to boost industrial production.

He added that electricity was supplied at lower rates without subsidies during the winter months.

The World Bank has expressed confidence in Pakistan's power sector reforms with an additional $55 million in funds. It is ready to support these initiative projects of the power sector.  

At the end of the meeting, the minister emphasized that reforms in the power sector have significantly improved revenue recovery.
