Former international umpire Khizar Hayat passes away at 86

Former Pakistani international cricket umpire Khizar Hayat passed away in Lahore on Sunday at the age of 86.

Family sources confirmed that he had been unwell for some time.

Khizar Hayat began his cricketing journey as a first-class player representing Pakistan Railways before turning to umpiring in the 1970s.

Over the course of his distinguished career, he supervised 34 Test matches, 57 One-Day Internationals, and also officiated in three Cricket World Cups, earning widespread respect for his accuracy and composure on the field.

After retiring from umpiring, Khizar Hayat continued serving the game through various roles associated with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).

The PCB Chairman, Mohsin Naqvi, expressed deep sorrow over his passing.

In his condolence message, Naqvi paid rich tribute to the veteran umpire, acknowledging his remarkable contributions to the profession.

“Khizar Hayat’s decisions on the field were recognised and respected worldwide,” Naqvi said.

 “Cricket umpiring will always remain indebted to him. His services to the game will be remembered for a long time.”
