Sugar mills have been violating laws of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP), according to an inquiry report.
The report says that sugar mill owners were involved in illegal money-making in connivance with the Sugar Mills Association. The inquiry has found solid evidence of JW Group’s involvement in illegal money-making in the sugar sector. Sugar mills will be issued notices in this regard.
Sugar mill owners and the Sugar Mills Association have also been involved in the recent sugar crisis in the country. Sugar mill owners also influenced the import of sugar, says the inquiry. Sugar prices increased by Rs16 per kilogram in three months due to delay in the import of the commodity.
According to CCP, the Rs18 per kilogram increase in prices led to generation of Rs40 billion revenue in 2019. CCP says that sugar mills also received Rs29 billion export subsidy.
