Govt may import wheat if floods cut production: Minister

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain on Tuesday said that Pakistan will import wheat in case of 6 percent less production, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.

Talking with media persons, Rana Tanveer Hussain said that the current government will import wheat worth $1.5 billion and wants to introduce people and farmers-friendly policies.

He said that “our farmers are thinking that in case of less payment for wheat cultivation, they will cultivate less wheat”.

The Federal Minister for National Food Security said that the government will talk to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on wheat subsidies and the flood situation.

He said that IMF softened their stance on the import of sugar in the country and he is quite optimistic that IMF will grant necessary relief on import of wheat.
