PMDC declares clinical practice of psychologists, dental technicians illegal

The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has declared the clinical practice of pharmacists, psychologists and dental technicians illegal, warning that unauthorised treatment and quackery are contributing to the spread of HIV and hepatitis in parts of the country.

According to a report by 24NewsHD TV channel, the PMDC has written an important letter to the Federal Ministry of National Health Services expressing concern over the growing trend of unregistered and unauthorised medical practice in Pakistan.

In the letter, the council stated that illegal treatment activities were helping spread infectious diseases, particularly in Islamabad and Mirpurkhas, where concerns over HIV and hepatitis cases have increased.

The PMDC said the diagnosis of illnesses, prescribing medicines and carrying out treatment are powers reserved only for qualified doctors and dentists. 

It added that only practitioners registered with the PMDC are authorised to provide allopathic treatment and perform surgeries.

The council further said that allied health professionals are not permitted to prescribe medicines or engage in independent clinical practice. 

It warned that such activities place human lives at risk and urged the relevant allied health professional council to immediately stop such practices.

The development comes a day after reports that the Ministry of Health had decided to enforce stricter infection control measures in hospitals following an increase in HIV and AIDS cases across the country.

A five-member committee has been formed by the ministry to review infection control, safe syringe use and coordination with provincial authorities. 

The panel will also prepare recommendations on HIV prevention and protective measures.
