Punjab govt plans laying electricity cables underground to avoid incidents
The Punjab government has prepared a master plan of laying electricity cables underground in cities to avoid incidents caused by short-circuits, electrocutions and fire eruptions, reported 24NewsHD TV channel.
In this regard, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif chaired a meeting in Lahore on Saturday.
Under the master plan, Lahore will be freed from hanging and dangerous electricity wires in the first phase.
To prevent unpleasant accidents during Basant, the elimination of 'killer wires' from the city will begin.
Maryam Nawaz ordered to save citizens from the torment of loadshedding by ensuring alternative supply during the operation to bury electricity wires.
She also reviewed the proposal to divide the entire Lahore into three zones and make electricity wires underground.
The meeting also decided in-principle to make underground wiring mandatory in housing schemes.
In this regard, a steering committee has been formed comprising Provincial Minister Faisal Khokhar, LESCO, Housing, Local Government officials and administrative officers.
Maryam Nawaz Sharif sought an emergency safety plan to permanently prevent fires and loss of life due to short circuits.
The Lesco officials briefed the meeting that there are 40,000 kilometers of electricity wires and 50,000 kilometers of internet cables spread across Lahore.
Maryam Nawaz said we want to avoid a tragedy like the Karachi Gul Plaza because public safety is our responsibility.
