Supply boost as ship carrying 38,000 metric tonnes oil docks at Port Qasim

In a positive development for Pakistan’s energy sector, an oil tanker carrying 38,000 metric tonnes of fuel has reached Port Qasim, providing a boost to the country’s petroleum supply chain amid ongoing regional uncertainties.

According to the 24NewsHD TV channel, the vessel, identified as MT Virgo, is currently stationed at the outer anchorage of Port Qasim after arriving in Karachi early Tuesday morning at around 3am.

According to Karachi Port's officials, the tanker had anchored a day earlier and is now awaiting further clearance for unloading operations from the authorities.

The arrival of the oil-laden ship comes at a time when authorities are making concerted efforts to ensure uninterrupted fuel supply across the country. Officials noted that such shipments are crucial in maintaining stability in the domestic energy market.

Earlier, on March 13, two vessels carrying between one million barrels of crude oil successfully docked in Karachi after sailing from Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates.

Both the ships were escorted by the Pakistan Navy, a precautionary measure taken in light of recent security concerns in regional waters, particularly near Fujairah.

Officials from the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation confirmed that the transfer of these vessels was completed safely within the Navy’s security perimeter, highlighting the importance of maritime protection in safeguarding vital energy supplies.

Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has also approached Iran to assist in facilitating the release of two ships currently stranded in the Persian Gulf, further underlining the challenges faced in ensuring smooth maritime operations.

In recent days, additional vessels have contributed to the fuel supply chain, including the gas oil carrier MT Torum Damini, which docked at the Fotco Terminal at Port Qasim, and MT Nave Atropos, which delivered 50,000 metric tonnes of petrol after arriving on March 9.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation vessel Palki remains berthed at the Saudi port of Ras Tanura after being halted due to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns about potential disruptions in shipping routes.

A spokesperson for Port Qasim confirmed that another vessel from Fujairah has already reached the port, while more tankers are expected in the coming days to ensure a steady and uninterrupted supply of petroleum products throughout the country.
