Illegal Indian medicines seized in Karachi; warehouse sealed, guards arrested

In a significant operation based on secret information, Pakistan Customs Enforcement Karachi seized a massive cache of smuggled Indian medicines worth Rs 100 million, 24NewsHD TV channel reported on Tuesday.

According to the report, the raid, conducted in the Korangi Industrial Area, led to the confiscation of 22 million tablets and 7,000 capsules, while the warehouse was immediately sealed and its guards arrested for investigation.

Customs Officer Bisma Jatoi told the media that the operation was part of an ongoing crackdown against illegal pharmaceutical imports.

“The investigation is underway, and we expect positive results. More pharmaceutical companies involved in this smuggling network will also face action,” she stated.

Tainted Indian medicines: A global health threat

It is worth noting that 24NewsHD TV Channel had previously reported on June 29, 2023, that substandard Indian medicines have been causing deaths in multiple countries, including Uzbekistan, Indonesia, Gambia, Liberia, and Nigeria.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a global alert in December 2022, highlighting the severe health risks posed by these medicines.

Investigations revealed that Indian pharmaceutical companies used industrial-grade hazardous ingredients in their medicines, leading to child fatalities worldwide. In an attempt to cover up their crime, these companies even paid $60,000 in bribes.

The deadly drugs included cough syrups, paracetamol syrups, and eye drops, with the latter causing a major epidemic in the United States in February 2024.

Growing Global Backlash Against Indian Pharmaceuticals

Due to mounting concerns over fake and hazardous Indian medicines, several countries are now reconsidering their import policies on Indian pharmaceutical products.

The latest seizure in Karachi raises further alarms regarding the spread of these dangerous drugs into Pakistan.

Authorities have vowed to continue cracking down on smuggled medicines and taking strict action against all those involved in the illegal trade.
