Lake Victoria rebounds in style to win Irish 1000 Guineas

Master Irish trainer Aidan O'Brien won a record-extending 11th Irish 1000 Guineas as favourite Lake Victoria won in style at The Curragh.

Ryan Moore had to work hard to get last year's Breeder's Cup Juvenile Fillies Stakes victor past outsider California Dreamer but once she hit the front she brooked no argument in taking the honours.

She had over two lengths to spare on 50/1 runner-up California Dreamer with another outsider Cercene (20/1) third.

For O'Brien it was his second Guineas of the season -- he won the French 2000 with Henri Matisse -- and justified his faith in Lake Victoria.

Having won all five of her starts last term she began the campaign with sixth in the English 1000 Guineas earlier this month.

She turned the tables in Ireland on the English Guineas runner-up and third.

"She was very good today," said Moore, who was winning the race for the fourth time.

"She wasn't quite there when she went round at Newmarket,

"She was a lot better than them, she quickened up very well, a very smart filly, she's exciting, does everything beautifully.

"Her record last year was good. I'm glad that she's able to get back on track."

Moore, 41, said whether she would be as hard to beat as last term was open to question.

"I don't know if she'd be untouchable," he said.

"She's very good, she'll be very hard for the fillies to handle so see what she does the next day."

Bookies make Lake Victoria 13/8 favourite for next month's Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, ahead of French Guineas winner Zarigana (7/2) and Newmarket victor Desert Flower who is 4/1.

It rounded off a Group One double for O'Brien and Moore, who also won the Gold Cup with last year's Irish Derby winner Los Angeles.

It was O'Brien's first win in the race since Empress Josephine won in 2021.
