Space milestone: Pakistan readies first advanced hyperspectral satellite for launch

Pakistan is prepared to take a revolutionary step in space technology with the launch of its first advanced hyperspectral satellite in October 2025, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Thursday. 

The project, spearheaded by the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), is expected to reshape the country’s capacity in mineral exploration, agriculture, forestry, and climate monitoring.

The state-of-the-art hyperspectral satellite will analyze light wavelengths to produce precise data on minerals, vegetation, soil, and water quality. 

This technology will significantly reduce both the time and cost associated with resource surveys, which previously took years but can now be completed in days.

The satellite’s applications are wide-ranging. It will help identify and map mineral reserves, enhance crop monitoring and agricultural productivity, and track environmental challenges such as glacier melt, deforestation, flooding, and air pollution.

It will also support disaster prevention, infrastructure development, and geohazard mapping, particularly in projects linked to the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Addressing the inauguration of a workshop, SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousaf Khan said the hyperspectral satellite will pave the way for efficient resource utilisation and evidence-based policymaking. 

He emphasised that the project would empower researchers and policymakers with timely, reliable data and mark a decisive step toward building Pakistan into a strong hub of space technology in the region.

“With this satellite, Pakistan moves closer to global standards in space research while serving national interests,” the SUPARCO chairman noted.
