Spanish actress Verónica Echegui died at 42

Spanish actress Verónica Echegui has died at the age of 42 following a battle with cancer, leaving the Spanish film industry in shock, 24NewsHD TV reported on Tuesday.

She was rushed to a Madrid hospital on Sunday, where she tragically passed away. The news came as a surprise to many, as very few people were aware of her illness.

Born in Madrid in 1983, Echegui began her acting journey with small television roles before rising to fame in 2006 with her breakout performance in the film Yo soy la Juani.

Over the course of her 18-year career, she built a remarkable portfolio, appearing in more than 30 films and television series. Her credits include My Prisoner’s Yard (2008), The Cold Light of Day opposite Bruce Willis and Sigourney Weaver, Explota Explota (2020), and Objetos (2022).

Echegui also ventured into international projects, featuring in the British drama series Fortitude (2015–2017) and the romantic comedy Book of Love. Earlier this year, she appeared in the Apple TV+ series Love You To Death, which marked her final role on screen.

Beyond her professional achievements, Echegui was admired for her courage in speaking out against sexual abuse in the entertainment industry.

In 2020, she revealed that she had personally endured three such incidents, using her voice to advocate for safer spaces for women in film and television.

Her untimely passing has left a deep void in Spanish cinema, with colleagues, fans, and industry leaders paying tribute to her extraordinary talent and fearless spirit.
