Gohar Ejaz unveils one-page Income Tax Return Form to simplify filing process

Chairman Economic Policy and Business Development Gohar Ejaz has proposed to launch of a simplified one-page income tax return form aimed at expanding the country’s tax base and making filing easier for citizens.

He also shared the template for the one-page income tax return form in a post on X.

Speaking on the development, Gohar Ejaz said the initiative is designed to increase the number of tax filers significantly, with projections suggesting that taxpayers could rise from around 7 million to nearly 100 million under the simplified system.

He noted that approximately 7 million taxpayers are currently registered, while only about 3 million individuals actively file tax returns.

Criticizing the existing system, he said the Federal Board of Revenue’s (FBR) 147-page return form is overly complex and discourages compliance. In contrast, the newly introduced one-page form has been designed for ease of use and greater accessibility.

Gohar Ejaz added that even countries such as the United States use relatively short tax return forms, with the US system reportedly consisting of around two pages.

The newly introduced one-page tax return form includes essential taxpayer details such as sources of income, tax deductions, and basic family information, consolidating key data into a simplified format.

He said the Economic Policy and Business Development initiative aims to streamline tax filing procedures and encourage wider participation in the formal economy by reducing administrative burdens on taxpayers.
