Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz said on Thursday that not a single life was lost due to the provincial government’s negligence during recent floods, reported 24NewsHD TV channel. 

Talking to the media during her visit to the River Ravi at Shahdara, where she reviewed the arrangements made to save people from floodwater, she said that floods were not being expected in the province on such a massive scale. “Never ever in my life have I seen the River Ravi in such a fury,” she added.

The chief minister further said that presently there were floods in three rivers of the province namely Chenab, Ravi and Sutlej.  

Asserting that the protection of lives and properties of the people was the responsibility of the government, she said that so far over 50,000 people had been shifted to safe locations.

The CM said that the Rescue 1122 and other departments were fully alert. “Had these departments not been alert, there would have been more destruction.”

She assured the flood-affected people that their losses would be compensated. “I want to tell the people of the province that the government is with you, and it will reach out to each and every affected person.” 

She also lauded the performance of the departments, which she said worked in collaboration with each other to move people to safe places on time. “I applaud all deputy commissioners, civil defence and Rescue 1122 for that.” 

Maryam said that she had sought a plan from the NDMA and PDMA on the future strategy for dealing with floods. 

Maryam stressed the need for taking decisions by rising above political considerations. 

Terming the water released by India a ‘blessing’, Maryam stressed the need for storing water for the future.
