Google limits Meta's AI computing access amid capacity constraints

Google has imposed new restrictions on Meta's access to computing resources for its artificial intelligence (AI) projects after being unable to meet the social media giant's growing demand for AI processing capacity, 24NewsHD TV reported on Sunday. 

According to a report by the Financial Times, Meta had asked Google for additional computing power to support its AI initiatives.

However, Google informed the company in March this year that it could not provide the level of computing capacity required for Meta's Gemini AI-related workloads due to resource limitations.

The report said the shortage delayed several of Meta's internal AI projects.

While other Google customers were also affected by limited computing resources, Meta faced the biggest impact because of its exceptionally high demand for AI infrastructure.

Following the reported restrictions, Meta has instructed its employees to use AI tokens more carefully and efficiently. AI tokens are the units used to measure the amount of data processed by AI models and the scale of their usage.

Neither Google nor Meta immediately commented on the report, while Reuters said it could not independently verify the claims.

Industry experts say major technology companies are investing billions of dollars in new data centres and advanced AI chips, but the rapid global growth in demand for artificial intelligence continues to outpace available computing capacity.

The report also noted that although Google Cloud has posted strong revenue growth, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has acknowledged that shortages in computing resources have limited the company's ability to expand even further.
